“死”这个字，在中国是很不吉利的一个字，所以我们习惯用“与世长辞”，“不在了”，“坏掉了”等代替。

在国外，当然也有这种说法，这种隐晦的说法叫Euphemisms for death.

When someone has died 当某人已经死了。。。

• He is in a better place.
• taken from us
• passed on
• passed over
• checked out (slang）-impolite
• kicked the bucket 翘辫子 （slang）-impolite
• bought the farm (slang)-impolite
• given up the ghost 阎王让你三更死，谁人能活到五更
• turn up his toes  这是一种姿势，脚都竖起来了，代表人去世了。
• cashed in his chips (slang)-impolite
• croaked(slang)-impolite
• bitten the dust (slang)-impolite
• gone west 西方即是极乐
• shook off this mortal coil (文学上的说法，出自莎士比亚的《哈姆雷特》）

When someone has died and buried 当某人已入土了。。

• pushing up daisies  墓穴旁，亲人撒上黄a菊花花瓣送死者最后一程。可见，黄a菊花不可乱送。
• sleeping the big sleep
• taking a dirt nap
• checking out the grass from underneath
• six feet under  我记得有部电视剧叫这个名字
